The increased presence of adolescent girl protagonists in popular videogames calls for deeper analysis into their representational potential. When all is said and done, everything that was added to the game was pretty great, but I guess I was expecting a combination of mindbogglingly complicated time shenanigans meshed together with general cleverness to resolve the loop and clean up the rest of the narrative threads.Įh, I suppose when you get down to it the disappointment I felt was more or less self-inflicted.Liminal Rhetoric in Girlhood Games: Developmental Disruption in Night School Studio’s Oxenfree by Stephanie Harkin Abstract The result of this choice was that the group did not go to the island, and I can only assume that is what the other options did too. Once I got to the end, I was confused because as far as I could tell all of the options offered to me would produce paradoxes, all the same I choose the 'Do not use radio while on island.' option. Once I was halfway though, I thought that the trick to NG+ was not to send a message to yourself, but to send a specific message to Clarissa in the past, which would then in turn mess with the 'ghost's, or their control over her, or something. How many iterations did it take for that guy to completely fly off the handle again? Until she eventually discovers the perfect series of actions and conditions required to resolve the loop, or perhaps the opposite of that, where Alex is given a whiff of hope, only to have the universe double down on the hopeless fatalism, hammer the despair of inevitably home.Īfter all, the only thing worse than being trapped in a time loop is being fully aware that you are trapped in a time loop. When beginning, I hoped that NG+ would expect multiple playthroughs of the game, with Alex becoming a little more aware of her situation with each iteration. Did anyone else feel similarly? Or did you think it was good? Or am I missing something about the ending, perhaps? But I think its fair to be disappointed that the 'true' ending the update has given us felt just as unsatisfying as the originals. I don't mean to complain just because the ending didn't turn out exactly the way I'd hoped for. When I first finished the game, my thoughts were that it would have been better had they left out the loop twist at the end, for the same reasons.īut once the update was announced, I'd hoped that the new ending would provide us with a real means of breaking the loop, so that however the new story turned out it would at least be permanent. None of that happened for them, and never will. The Alex you controlled and the characters you knew are still reset by the original game's loop, and the group that goes free may almost as well be another cast entirely - they have no connection to the story that the player experienced, or the choices he made. I thought it was nice to see that in some realities the characters escape their otherwise miserable fate, but personally I cant help but feel that this new ending has the same pitfall of the previous ones, in that the choices you made, the relationships that you formed or broke between the characters over the course of your playthrough, is still all erased. So I've finished a NG+, and gotten the post-ending sequence where Alex and co receive a warning from another timeline and don't go the island.
